Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Do governments know how many people may be at risk of being slave laborers? What actions are being undertaken in order to prevent this? What types of penalties are being applied to traffickers, recruiters and others that subject human beings to forced labor conditions? What steps are being undertaken in order to help people escape forced labor and find alternative ways of living with dignity?

A - Putting an end to forced labor is an action that requires several fronts. First, there has to be an overview about how forced labor works under different contexts, and who is involved, as victim or agent.

Solutions must be adjusted to the circumstances encountered. A series of actions is required: from preventive and awareness building campaigns to law enforcement and rehabilitation programs.

The prevention of forced labor involves the creation of income generation alternatives, land reform, fair conditions for small farmers so that they may not submit themselves to forced labor conditions.

There also is a need for improved law enforcement, with effective solutions for victims and severe punishment for those responsible for such a crime. Awareness building campaigns also play an important role.
